Statement on the Un-Islamic Brutality of Extremist Groups such as the So-Called “Islamic State”of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)
There is no compulsion in religion. Surely the right course is distinct from the wrong. And who ever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trust worthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah hears and knows (all things). (Al-Quran 2:256)
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah often. (Al- Quran 33:21)
The Conveners of Imams associated with the Community of Imam W. Deen Mohammed stand in solidarity with those who are appalled and condemn the brutal, indiscriminate murder, rape, and violence against innocent men, women, and children committed any where in the world! We further condemn the religious extremism of groups, including ISIS and Al-Qaeda, perpetrated in the name of Al-Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This includes the invitation to Muslims to join their in human and un-Islamic terror campaigns that destroy private property and the houses of worship of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others.
The religion of Al-Islam and the example of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) promote human excellence, religious freedom, social justice, and tolerance of human and religious diversity. Every Muslim is obligated to protect the dignity and freedom of all human beings. This includes the protection of houses of worship such as monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques (Al-Quran 22:40). The recent horrific examples of crimes against humanity by groups like ISIS are totally contrary to these universal principles which are embraced in the religion of Al- Islam.
As we denounce these actions, we also understand the history and complexity of this conflict and pray that people of faith and goodwill can find a way to work together towards mutual respect, cooperation, and peace.
