On April 12, 2014 the Health Committee of Masjid Muhammad held a program titled “Families Choosing Healthy Lifestyles”. InshaAllah, this will be a three-class project in which participants learn how to eat more nutritionally and learn how to use exercise to increase their health. It is a program being conducted at places of worship all over Washington, D.C. and produced by the DC Dept. of Health and Medstar Washington Hospital Center. It is free to participants!

One of the goals, other than the individual and family health benefits, is to create a cookbook of healthy recipes. The instructor of the program is Ms. Tanya Smith, who is working on her graduate degree in Public Health. She had to take an instructor’s class to qualify as our instructor. In the first class, we were given food diary journals, pedometers and instructed in calculating our BMI (body mass index) rates; which indicates if we are thin or obese. The Masjid has been given two blood pressures machines, a scale, a laptop, and two digital cameras. Any member and his/her family is welcomed to join us for Class 2 on Saturday May 17, 2-4:30PM.
